CHINA'S BYD WEIGHS EV PLANT IN MEXICO: NIKKEI

MEXICO
  • Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has launched a feasibility study for a Mexican plant, as it seeks to establish an export hub to the U.S. The company is negotiating with national and local government officials over a location and other terms for the plant. No decision on location has been made, but the northern state of Nuevo Leon and the Bajio region in central Mexico appear to be leading candidates according to the Nikkei report.
  • Mexico aims to become a key manufacturing hub for major EV makers, with Tesla planning to build a gigafactory in Nuevo Leon, and Kia, BMW and Stellantis all saying they will manufacture EVs in the country. Recently, Chinese suppliers have announced about $1 billion in parallel investments.
