China To Allow Foreign Investors To Trade On Bond Market

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has announced that it will allow qualified foreign institutional investors including central banks, sovereign funds, and pension funds to invest in bonds on its smaller exchange market.

  • The PBOC said in statement that the measure would 'help expand capital inflows to China.'
  • The statement reads: '[The measure] is an important step in further promoting the institutional opening up of China's bond market, which is conducive to improving the diversified investor team, enhancing the liquidity and robustness of the bond market, expanding the inflow of capital accounts … and enhancing the ability of the financial system to cope with the complex international situation.'
  • Bloomberg: 'Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s plea this week for officials to move decisively to prevent the economy from backsliding and the nation’s grim economic data highlight the risks the world’s second-largest economy is facing amid stringent Covid-19 lockdowns.'
