Cloture Invoked On Continuing Resolution To Fund Government

US

The Senate will now vote tomorrow on whether the Federal Government will remain funded under a 'stopgap' continuing resolution until March 11.

  • The Senate has just voted to invoke cloture 65-30 on the the motion to proceed on HR 6617 (Continuing Resolution). This clears the path for a senate vote tomorrow and avoids the risk of government shutdown.
  • Senator Pat Leahy (D-VT) delivered remarks before the cloture vote: 'The government will shut down at midnight tomorrow if we do not send a continuing resolution in its current form to the president for his signature. So I would urge all members to oppose any amendments, whether they come from Republicans or Democrats.'
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) returned from New York today and said the Senate will not recess until they pass a short-term funding bill before the midnight deadline tomorrow.
