SLOVAKIA: Coalition negotiations are set to get underway following Saturday's
general election that resulted in a political earthquake.
- Centre-right anti-corruption 'Ordinary People' (OL'aNO ) won a plurality for
the first time, taking 53 of 150 (up 34) seats in National Council, with leader
Igor Matovic set to take over as PM.
- Populist left-wing Smer-SD won 38 seats (-11), and are set for opposition for
the first time since 2012 having governed for 12 of past 14 years.
- Extreme right People's Party-Our Slovakia failed to increase vote share
despite strong polling. Nevertheless, it sits as the joint-3rd largest party.
- Socially liberal Progressive Slovakia-SPOLU came 5th in terms of votes but
failed to win any seats as it fell below 7% threshold for electoral coalitions.
- Coalition between OL'aNO, centrist 'For the People' (12 seats, new to parl't)
and libertarian Freedom and Solidarity (13 seats, down 8) would hold narrow
majority with 78 seats.
- OL'aNO is untested in gov't, and there has been little sign of a coherent
policy agenda beyond anti-corruption pledges.
