Cold Weather Remains Risk For German Gas Supply This Winter: INES

NATURAL GAS

Germany could still run into natural gas supply problems this winter despite high gas storage levels, storage operators group INES said, cited by Reuters.

  • German gas reserves stood at 97.35% as of 10 October, GIE data show.
  • "Even if the gas storage facilities were fully filled again before winter, gas demand could probably no longer be fully met amid extremely cold temperatures and current consumption patterns," INES said.
  • "Compliance with a legally mandated filling level requirement of 40% by 1 February 2024 will be challenging, even at normal temperatures," the group said.
  • The group’s worst-case scenario sees German gas supply gaps of 10TWh in January, 16TWh in February and 13TWh in March 2024. Daily gas usage peaked last December at 4.8TWh, driven by cold weather and high home heating usage.
