Conservatives Extend Lead Over Labour To 15% In Latest Poll

UK

The latest YouGov opinion poll shows Prime Minister Boris Johnson's centre-right Conservatives extending their lead over the main opposition centre-left Labour Party to 15%, the widest lead for the party since May 2020.

  • Westminster voting intention: Conservative: 45% (+2), Labour: 30% (-3), Green: 8% (+2), Liberal Democrat: 7% (-), ReformUK: 2% (-1). via @YouGov. Chgs. w/ 05 May. Fieldwork: 11-12 May.
  • The rise in support for the Conservatives may be attributed to a polling phenomenon seen in many nations known as the 'winners aura', where a party or candidate that wins an election sees an immediate boost in polling in the following weeks after an election win (for the Conservatives coming in the form of the party's win in the Hartlepool by-election and English council elections on 6 May).
  • The poor score for Labour - if sustained - is likely to place even more pressure on party leader Sir Keir Starmer, who has had to deal with a vocal backlash from the left of his party for the poor election results on 6 May and a botched shadow Cabinet reshuffle in its aftermath.
