The two latest opinion polls ahead of the 20 September federal election show the main opposition Conservatives taking the lead as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's calling of a snap election risks backfiring on the Liberal party leader.

  • While the Liberals would still likely lead the gov't if the Conservatives fall short of a majority (the leftist NDP is a more natural ally of the Liberals than the Conservatives), if the Liberal seat share falls from present levels if could deal major damage to Trudeau's prestige and threaten his position at the head of the party.
