CPI Contributions Suggest Wide Breadth Of Gains

The chart below shows the percentage point contributions to February's M/M CPI print. While the strong rise in Food and Energy prices was no surprise, there were some significant shifts that were less easy to foresee, including the slowing growth in medical care prices.

  • Overall though it appears to be another robust report in terms of price breadth and it wasn't just a small set of outlying categories contributing robustly to core inflation.
  • The Cleveland Fed median inflation data due out later today will probably show another print close to last month's record +0.58% M/M.
