Defence Min Gallant Reportedly Considers Pushing For Unity Gov't With Opposition Leaders

ISRAEL

Yedioth Ahronoth ran an unsourced report noting that Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant was considering pushing for a unity government with opposition party leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz to soothe tensions over the ongoing judicial overhaul.

  • Referring to the report, the Times of Israel wrote that "Gallant has concluded that Lapid and Gantz must urgently be brought into the fold, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich (...) should be booted from the coalition."
  • The story was originally reported by veteran columnist Nahum Barnea, who suggested that Gallant was ready to give up his Cabinet portfolio to pave the way for a unity government.
  • Gallant spearheaded failed attempts of moderate Likud lawmakers to broker a compromise with opposition parties and delay the adoption of the "reasonableness" law earlier this week.
  • The Defence Minister has been under pressure from Israel's military establishment to try and prevent the judicial overhaul from affecting the country's combat readiness amid widespread protests among IDF reservists.
