Democrats Edge Ahead On Generic Congressional Ballot

US

Democrats have continued to strengthen in the generic Congressional ballot - A key midterm polling metric which ask respondents to make a binary choice between an unnamed House Democrat and unnamed House Republican.

  • According to RealClearPolitics the Democrat advantage is .2% - the first Democrat lead since November 12 last year. According to FiveThirtyEight, Democrats are ahead by .5%.
  • The House of Representatives is still widely tipped to be heading to the Republican party in November, although the generic ballot suggests the prospects of a Red Wave are diminishing and the political environment is improving for Democrats suggesting an outside chance of retaining the lower chamber.
  • Polling in the Senate suggests that Democrats are firming as favourite to maintain control of the Upper Chamber, raising the prospect of a split Congress.
  • Such a Congressional divide (Republican House/Democrat Senate) would block Democrats from passing meaningful legislation but also prevent the Republican party from forcing President Biden to veto Republican passed legislation and prevent a potential move by the GOP to impeach the President, which should not be discounted considering the acrimonious state of partisan politics.
