Economy Minister: "Second Major Wave Of Virus Has Arrived"

Japanese Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura has stated that the second major wave of the COVID-19 outbreak has arrived in Japan.

  • In six of the past seven days Japan has recorded in excess of 1,000 new cases per day, lifting the total to 41,347.
  • Prior to the end of June, Japan had proved effective at curtailing the spread of the virus after an initial outbreak in April. However, since the easing of lockdown restrictions the number of cases has spiked throughout July and early August (see chart below).
  • At present the case numbers in Japan remain well below those of most other large developed markets.
