Embarrassment For PM Johnson As Unpaid Debt Ruling Comes To Light

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has suffered an embarrassing morning after satirical magazine Private Eye broke the news that the PM has a county court judgement (CCJ) against him for an unpaid debt of GBP535 from October 2020, which he still has not paid.

  • The episode could feasibly result in bailiffs being called into 10 Downing Street, given reclaiming a debt in this manner is legal after the issuance of a CCJ. A CCJ is not usually issued unless considerable work has gone into reclaiming the debt on behalf of the party owed payment.
  • The judgement, from 26 October 2020, came around the same time that news first emerged regarding the financial issues facing the PM in the rumoured GBP200k refurbishment of the flat he shares with fiancee Carrie Symonds above No. 11 Downing Street.
  • The ruling will not affect his position as PM or force his resignation, but could lead to renewed attacks on his redecoration of the No.11 flat and how the funds for the redecoration were obtained.
