Energy Minister Expects Akkuyu Nuclear Plant to Generate Electricity Next Year

Speaking at a Russian Energy Week forum, Turkey's Energy Minister Bayraktar said he expects the nation to start generating electricity from the first reactor at its Akkuyu nuclear plant next year and will “commission the entire power plant” over the next three to four years.   • The Akkuyu complex will be able to meet 10% of Turkey’s power needs once completely commissioned.
  • In its “long-term energy plans,” Turkey intends to raise nuclear output capacity to at least 20 gigawatts, more than four times the targeted generation of the Akkuyu plant.
  • “Definitely we need a second nuclear power plant, third nuclear power plant.”
