ENERGY: Slovakia Facing Pressure to End Russian Oil and Gas Flows: Fico

Slovakia is facing pressure from the EC to end Russian oil and gas flows but has a strong interest in continuing supply to the west via Ukraine, said Prime Minister Robert Fico cited by Reuters. 

  • "We have a fundamental interest in maintaining transit routes for gas and oil through Ukraine, and we tell this to our Ukrainian partners," Fico said.
  • The country still relies on transit pipelines supplies through Ukraine and is concerned for supply disruptions.
  • Alternative routes were too expensive, and Slovakia wants to also remain a transit route, Fico added.
  • Ukraine previously stated it does not want to renew the gas transit deal with Russia after the current contract expiry at year end.
