Erdogan Directs Ship To Sail To East Med To Start Drilling

In a speech to his Justice and Development Party (AKP), Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the drilling vessel Yavuz, after maintenance, is to set sail for the Eastern Mediterranean to begin new hydrocarbon drilling operations.

  • The research vessel the Oruc Reis is already operating in disputed waters claimed by Turkey, Cyprus and Greece, escalating tensions between the historical adversaries.
  • Regional partners and NATO allies have tried to de-escalate tensions in the region over disputed maritime borders and hydrocarbon drilling rights, but these have proved ineffective.
  • The instruction to the ship Yavuz to sail to the disputed areas heightens the risk of overt conflict between Greek and Turkish naval forces.
