Erdogan Indicates Willingness To Close Bosporus

Laura Pitel of the FT says that Turkey is may be willing to close the Bosporus to Russia warships.

  • Pitel: 'Erdoğan indicates that Turkey will place curbs on Russian warships. "We have the authority and we have decided to use it in a way that will prevent the crisis from escalating." Also praises "the struggle of... the Ukrainian people"'.
  • Ankara has authority through the Montreux Convention to close the waterway during times of war but the Bosporus has been flagged as a potential flashpoint between Russia and NATO.
  • Closing the Bosporus will affect Russian supply chains to the Black Sea Fleet but also have a more significant effect on Russian operations in the Syria. The Bosporus is the only connection between the Russian Black Sea Fleet and its Mediterranean naval base in Tartus, Syria.
