ESTONIA-PM Kallas Faces Scrutiny Over Husband's Firm's Russian Revenues

CEE

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has defended her record and stated that "right now I'm sure" that she is odds-on to win any confidence vote brought against her. Kallas is facing significant scrutiny following the revelation that a logistics company part-owned by her husband has made more than EUR1.5mn in revenue from sales of its products to Russia over the past two years. In the wake of the invasion of Ukraine, Kallas has been one of the most vocal Russia hawks in the EU, and has advocated that not just Estonian firms but all those across the West should cease interacting with Russian businesses.

  • There has been speculation that the opposition Centre Party will seek to hold a parliamentary committee of investigation into the burgeoning scandal. Lauri Läänemets, chair of the centre-left Social Democrats - which sits as a junior partner to Kallas' centre-right Reform Party - has stated that he does not think such a committee should be established.
  • On 29 August Kallasfailed to appear before an extraordinary joint sitting of the parliamentary State Budget Control Select Committee and Anti-Corruption Select Committee, citing a busy schedule. She argued that ministers missing committees it not unorthodox, saying "Quite a number of ministers have failed to attend select committees and I think the record is held by Martin Helme [leader of the opposition EKRE]."
