Estonian PM-EU Should Not Weaken Sanctions On Russia

EU-RUSSIA

Delivering doorstep comments at the EUCO summit in Brussels, Estonian PM Kaja Kallas states that the EU 'should not weaken sanctions against Russia' and that the EU 'must criminalise circumvention of sanctions...closing loopholes in sanctions is more important than drafting new ones right now'. Kallas' comments come as UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is expected to address the summit and call for a loosening on sanctions of Belarusian fertiliser, arguing that the measures are damaging food supply chains in developing nations.

  • Russia hawks, notably Lithuania, are strongly opposed to such measures. Politico reports an Lithuanian diplomat stating that “There is no way we will agree to derogate sanctions on Belarusian fertilizers,”
