EU Gas Import Capacity Boost Needed for Gas Security

Europe remains vulnerable to gas supply shocks despite significant progress on cutting reliance on Russia according to RWE CEO Markus Krebber via FT.

  • European capacity to import gas needs to be boosted to cover for unexpected outages on pipelines or import terminals.
  • Continental Europe is not where it needs to be despite a much better position than last year. “We shouldn’t have an energy supply system which is without any margin or buffer,” Krebber said
  • EU gas storage is enough to meet about 2 to 2.5 months of peak winter consumption.
  • The German ideal target of phasing out coal-fired power plants by 2030 may struggle without market incentives from the government to develop new hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants.
