EU Gas Storage Towards 97% Full As Injections Back Near Normal Rates

European natural gas storage levels are gaining back towards the five year range highs up to 96.87% full on 7 Oct according to GIE data compared to the five year average of 88.5%.

  • Net injections have increased slightly in the last week and in line with average rates from the previous five years. Net injections averaged about 1,799GWh/d in the week to 7 Oct compared to the five year average for the period of just under 1,820GWh/d.
  • Injections have averaged 78% of the five year normal this summer and a continuation at that rate would bring stocks up to nearly 99% full by the end of the month. The highest end of summer storage level in recent years was 97.8% full in Oct 2019.
  • Ukraine storage is up to 38.17% full with foreign companies storing natural gas in the country this summer as EU stores near capacity.
  • All 18 EU AGSI reporting countries now have over 94% full gas storage. Storage in Germany is at 246.8Wh (97.1% full), Italy is at 190TWh (97.1%), Netherlands at 137.5TWh (96.6%), France at 128.4Wh (95.6%) and Austria at 93.7TWh (95.9%).
