EU Not Ready for Russian Gas Sanctions: Czech Republic

NATURAL GAS

The seventh EU sanctions package against Russia will not target gas according to Czech Prime Minister Petr Fial.

  • "What is definitely problematic is to include energy into the sanctions, because a rule must be observed that the sanctions must have a greater impact on Russia than on the countries imposing the sanctions." Fial said.
  • "I think that it [gas] should not be there, because a number of countries depend on Russian gas," he said.
  • “It won't happen this winter" Fial said when asked about cutting Russian energy to the Czech Republic. The country is almost solely dependent on Russia for its gas needs.
  • "I don't want to be too optimistic," he said when asked about joint EU gas purchases. The EU is set to discuss this proposal July 26.
