EU Wind, Solar Capacity Climbs 65% from 2019-23: Ember
POWER
The EU’s wind and solar capacity has risen 65% from 2019-23, with wind capacity climbing 31% and solar more than doubling to increase by 113% over the period, according to Ember.
- The EU added 52GW of wind over 2019-23 to reach 219GW last year, with about 137GW of solar installed to rise to 257GW over the same period.
- The additional capacity equalled a 46% rise, or 226TWh, of solar and wind generation from 2019 to 2023.
- The largest wind and solar capacity additions came from Germany and Spain but more than 50% of EU members have at least doubled their wind and solar capacity.
- In contrast, fossil generation fell by 22%, 247TWh, over the same period due to a sharp fall in Gas and Coal, which dropped by 21% and 25%, respectively.
- Wind generation is now the second largest source of EU power, surpassing gas, coal, hydro and solar - and is just below nuclear.
