EUCO Pres: Sanctions On Russian O&G 'Sooner Or Later'

Speaking in the European Parliament plenary session, European Council President Charles Michel states belief that sanctions on Russian O&G are likely coming down the line.

  • Michel: "We are toughening our sanctions to keep maximum pressure on the Kremlin. The new package includes a ban on coal imports. And I think that measures on oil, and even gas, will also be needed sooner or later."
  • Clearly there is a row brewing within the EU between institutions and member states in favour of much tougher action on Russia including sanctions on O&G, and those that are heavily reliant on Russian gas for energy productions that see a major economic cost from reducing or cutting off Russian supplies.
