Europe Min: Fair Brexit Deal Still Possible, But UK Must Not Break WA

GERMANY

Der Spiegel carries an open letter from German Minister of state for Europe Micheal Roth to the UK gov't stating that it must not breach international law in overriding aspects of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

  • On a conciliatory note, the letter says the German gov't still believes a 'fair' deal on a EU-UK FTA can still be reached.

  • [Translated from German] "With the law on the British internal market , central parts of the exit agreement would be massively violated. The exit agreement was signed just nine months ago - after all, a treaty under international law! - negotiated and signed. Are you already questioning it again?"
  • "With a willingness to compromise on both sides, with mutual trust and goodwill, a fair "deal" is still possible. But we don't need any games for that. A deal like this has no winners and losers. We now need that much-vaunted British pragmatism again, for which we have always envied you a little. We moved closer to each other on many points. With others, however, there are still major problems. It is really high time we came to an agreement!"
