European Industrial Gas-To-Oil Switching To Rise in 4Q

ENERGY

European fuel switching has increased this year and is estimated to increase further in the last quarter, amid limited gas supplies from Russia.

  • Gas-to-oil switching was 300k bpd in the 3Q22 and could reach 450k bpd in 4Q22, both almost twice the amount in the same periods last year, according to IEA estimates.
  • Industries such as glass producers, tyre makers and refineries have therefore been trying to switch to other fuels.
  • However, European industries' ability to substitute natural gas with diesel and fuel oil to produce power is limited by high infrastructure costs and strict environmental regulations.
  • European industries' capacity to switch from gas to liquid fuels is around 2GW, or 2% of total installed capacity, according to Eurelectric, around 3% according to Rystad, and 5% according to FGE.
