Experts Warn of Risks In Second Constitution Rewrite Process

CHILE
  • There could be more months of political grandstanding as the second process kicks off to re-write the nation’s constitution, two of the country’s top legal experts have indicated.
  • The latest version is expected to be outlined initially by a committee of experts and then adapted and approved by an elected assembly. According to Gaston Gomez and Francisco Zuniga, who are law professors at Universidad de Chile and have advised presidents and political parties, there is potential for a power struggle between those two bodies.
    • “Success is by no means guaranteed,” said Gomez. “Problems can be very near and very serious.”
    • “Despite the broad agreement reached by the main political parties for this new process, the pact has risks, such as being perceived as elitist by the public,” said Zuniga. Full Bloomberg article here.
  • Separately, a committee of ministers will decide on the future of Andes Iron’s $2.5b Dominga mine project. In his speech after winning the elections, President Gabriel Boric said he would reject the project.
