'External Threat' Was Bridge Fire, USCP Confirm No Risk To Capitol

US

The US Capitol Police have released a statement confirming that the evacuation of the inauguration rehearsal (see 1536GMT bullet) came as a result of 'an abundance of caution' but that there were no fires on the Capitol complex and individuals were only advised to shelter during the investigation of the incident.

  • Even with the fire being so far away, the swift lockdown ordered shows the jitteriness of DC security officials ahead of the inauguration of President Elect Biden on Wednesday. Many continue to advocate an indoors inauguration due to the security concerns.
  • Huge numbers of DC police, Secret Service, and National Guard troops remain around the Capitol and other key gov't buildings.
