Far-Right VOX Hits Multi-Month High In Latest Poll

SPAIN

The far-right nationalist VOX party secured 17.9% in the latest opinion poll from ElectoPanel, the highest level of support the party has received in a poll from that outlet and the second-highest on record (reaching 19.7% in one poll in Oct-20).

  • General election poll: PSOE : 29% (+1.7), PP: 21.6% (-1.3), Vox: 17.9% (+2.1), UP: 10.2% (-0.5), Cs: 5.6% (-1.9). ElectoPanel, 16/02/21, chgs w/6-12 Feb
  • Spain's main opposition, the centre-right People's Party (PP), continues to struggle with the fallout from a long-running graft scandal that has embroiled senior party figures. The party secured just 3.6% of the vote in Catalonia's regional election held on 14 Feb, the worst result in the PP's history in the region. This result compounded a poor result in last year's Basque Country regional election and is demonstrative of the PP's increasing irrelevance in Spain's autonomous communities with sizeable independence movements.
  • Spain's next general election does not have to take place until 2023. However, the growing support for the anti-immigrant, populist, hardline anti-secessionist VOX could see a right-wing government involving the PP, VOX, and the centre-right Citizens (Cs) become a possibility at the federal level. There is a precedent for this, with PP and Cs already governing in the autonomous community of Andalusia in a minority administration propped up by VOX.
