- Retail sales are expected to rise by 0.3% in January based on both the
Bloomberg consensus and MNI survey of analysts. This follows a modest January
gain and a sharp December decline.
- Retail sales ex. motor vehicles are forecast to rise by 0.2% by the Bloomberg
consensus and by 0.4% in the MNI survey. This series posted a solid 0.9% gain in
January.
- A gain in gasoline prices after a downward trend is a key factor 
- There is a clear trend toward underestimates for both overall and ex-mv sales,
so an upside surprise is possible.
- Retail sales for March will be released on April 18.
