Federal Council Joins EU In Placing Sanctions On Russia

SWITZERLAND

The Swiss gov't is joining with the EU in placing sanctions on Russian individuals and entities in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

  • Spokesman of the Federal Council Andre Simonazzi tweets: "Russia’s ongoing military attack on a sovereign European country is an extremely serious violation of international law. The Federal Council is therefore changing Switzerland’s stance on sanctions. Switzerland is adopting EU sanctions and will implement them in coordination with EU. Assets of listed individuals and companies are frozen with immediate effect. Financial sanctions against the Russian President, PM and Foreign Minister are also to be implemented with immediate effect. Switzerland’s neutrality and peace policy considerations were taken into account in these decisions. Switzerland will examine each further package of EU sanctions on a case-by-case basis...."

  • Given Switzerland's long-standing neutral stance on international issues, the decision to implement a sanctions regime against Russia is likely to garner notable attention in the West and Russia.
