Feijóo To Face Investiture Vote On 27 September

SPAIN

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the centre-right Popular Party (PP), will face a prime ministerial investiture vote in the Congress of Deputies on 27 September. This leaves Feijóo with just over one month to convince a majority of deputies to vote in his favour in order to oust acting PM Pedro Sanchez. The vote comes afterKing Felipe VI offered Feijóo an investiture vote as head of the largest party in parliament as is customary.

  • The best hope for Feijóo is to convince the regionalist Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) to offer its five deputies in support of his candidacy. Supporting Feijóo would allow the PP head a win in the first investiture vote with 176 deputies, the exact threshold required for a majority.
  • Nevertheless, it remains a difficult path to a Feijóo premiership given the strong opposition of regionalist parties towards Vox's inclusion in, or even presence near, a PP-led gov't.
