Fico's Smer Reaches Deal With Hlas & SNS To Form Coalition Government

SLOVAKIA

Wires report that Slovakia's election front-runners Smer-SD signed a agreement with centre-left Hlas and right-wing Slovak National Party (SNS), setting the scene for the emergence of a coalition government led by Robert Fico. The Smer-Hlas-SNS coalition will control 79 seats in the 150-seat parliament.

  • The odds of the formation of a three-party government led by Smer increased yesterday as Hlas declared that they would only consider coalition with Fico's party. Hlas leader Robert Pellegrini added that he would prefer an alliance with the SNS over an alternative fourt-party coalition with the conservatives and liberals.
  • Fico's campaign included a pledge to halt all military support for Ukraine, while the future Prime Minister remains opposed to Western sanctions against Russia. Pellegrini sought to address related concerns yesterday, arguing that the presence of Hlas in the ruling coalition will ensure foreign policy continuity.
