Fin Min To Announce Debt Brake Suspension Today-Wires

GERMANY

Wires reporting that German Finance Minister Christian Lindner is set to announce a suspension of the country's debt brake later today. The suspension of the constitutional borrowing limit for 2023 comes in the aftermath of the Constitutional Court rulinglast week that blew a EUR60bn hole in the federal budget, resulting in a delay to its completion.

  • Lindner faces a difficult political climate in the coming days and weeks. His pro-business liberal Free Democrats (FDP) will hold a non-binding voteamong party members on whether to continue in the 'traffic light' gov't under Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
  • There is no set date for the vote yet, or even what format it will take, according to RND. The impact of the vote is likely to be reduced should only a small proportion of FDP members participate. However, a sizeable vote against the gov'ts continuation would risk not only Linder's position as party head, but the continuation of the federal coalition in its current format.
