Final Results From NM Special Election Confirm Comfortable Win For Democrat

The final results from Tuesday's special election in New Mexico's first Congressional district confirms a comfortable win for Democratic party candidate Melanie Stansbury. Stansbury won 60.3% of the vote compared to 35.7% for Republican challenger Mark Moores. The seat came up for grabs following the appointment of incumbent Representative Deb Haaland as Secretary of State for the Interior in the Biden administration.

  • Stansbury won the district by a margin of 24.6%, greater than the 16.4% margin former Representative Deb Haaland won by in 2020, and greater than the 22.8% margin Joe Biden carried the district by over Donald Trump in that year's presidential election.
  • The Republicans had sought to make the election a referendum on the rising levels of crime in the district that encompasses the majority of the city of Albuquerque, the state's largest city.
