Finland Says External Party Caused Balticconnector Outage

NATURAL GAS

Finland determined that an external party was involved in the breach of the Balticconnector gas pipeline and the two data cables, Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto said.

  • “There’s plenty of circumstantial evidence and it’s now about weaving all of that together,” Niinisto said. “I’m sure we’ll be able to draw conclusions in time.”
  • Investigation by the Finnish police has focused on several vessels that could be linked to the incident, it said on Tuesday, naming Newnew Polarbear and Sevmorput among those that were in the vicinity at the time of damage. The two container vessels are registered under Hong Kong and Russia, respectively, according to data provider Marinetraffic.
  • The pipeline was taken offline on 8 October following a leak. Repairs are scheduled to last five months with the earliest commissioning date set for April.
