POWER: Finland, Sweden Delay Plan to Reduce HVDC Cable Strain via Market Trading

POWER

Fingrid is postponing the introduction of a new procedure aimed at reducing transmission direction changes in power cables due to additional system development required by Svenska Kraftnat, the TSO said.

  • Frequent changes in transmission direction put stress on HVDC cables, which can shorten their service life, according to Fingrid.
  • Fingrid and Svenska Kraftnat plan to engage in intraday market trading to limit transmission direction changes.
  • Additionally, to prevent additional changes, the TSO will pre-limit cross-border transmission capacity in the intraday market.
  • Fingrid will trade electricity as needed, with any remaining needs met through balancing market adjustments or firm transactions, according to the TSO
  • The changes were meant to be implemented on 18 March 2025 but a new date  will be announced once the necessary updates are completed.
