Fiscal Pledges Under Scrutiny As Election Campaign Gathers Steam

  • EU Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sek told public broadcaster that that "there is no technical possibility for EU recovery funds to be disbursed in one day, week or month, because just the process of reviewing an application (...) takes two months, not mentioning that [the European Commission has] at least another few weeks to complete the payment." He added that the key to unlocking EU funds is in the Constitutional Tribunal's decision on court reforms required by the Commission.
  • Rzeczpospolita reports that the 2023 election campaign could be the most expensive one in Poland's history, as the two largest parties have already unveiled generous pledges, with more expected to come as the campaign progresses. After the ruling Law and Justice vowed to boost its flagship child benefit programme, the main opposition Civic Platform promised to double the tax-free personal allowance. According to DGP sources, the ruling party is planning to present additional proposals, something that was flagged by its Secretary General yesterday.
  • Government spokesman Piotr Muller told Polsat News that the ruling administration would like to pursue judicial reforms if elected for another term. Previous reforms drew accusations of trying to politicise the judiciary, setting Poland on a collision course with the EU.
