FM Raab Sets Out Guidance For UK Firms Dealing w/China's Xinjiang Province

UK

Foreign Minister Dominic Raab giving a statement on alleged use of forced labour in camps in China's Xinjiang province and the measures the UK gov't is bringing in on UK businesses sourcing materials from the province.

  • Raab: "I've made my concerns over Xinjiang directly to China's foreign minister Wang Yi...China's response is to deny as a matter of fact... they say it's lies...The UK will continue to support further research to understand the scale and the nature of human rights violations in Xinjiang."
  • Raab: "Today I can announce a range of new measures to send a clear message these violations of human rights are unacceptable...Any company profiting from forced labour will be barred from govt procurement in this country...This package will help make sure no British organisations...are profiting from...or contributing to human rights violations against the Uighurs... in Xinjiang"
  • This is one of the more robust statements from a western foreign minister in relation to the situation in Xinjiang, and the economic measures put in place to stop UK businesses dealing with the region are likely to hamper relations between London at Beijing further at a time when they were already strained over the crackdown on pro-democracy politicians in Hong Kong.
