Foreign Min Summons US, UK, Canadian Ambassadors

RUSSIA

Russia's state-run media reporting that the foreign ministry has summoned the ambassadors of the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. According to Tass the ambassadors have been summoned "In connection with gross interference in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation and activities that do not correspond to diplomatic status."

  • There has been significant focus on the diplomatic activities of Russia and the US in particular following the detention of WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich, a US citizen, on charges of espionage. Gershkovich appeared in court for the first time today, with US Ambassador Lynne Tracey in attendance.
  • Another notable action from the Russian gov't has been the cancelling of the 'Immortal Regiment' procession for this year. The procession historically allows Russians to parade through the streets with pictures of veterans killed in war. However, there are likely concerns that given the exceedingly high death toll of Russian troops in Ukraine that allowing a large number of bereaved relatives to march together at a time of high passions could result in anti-gov't fervour growing. Recently leaked Pentagon documents estimate that 35,500-43,000 Russian servicemen have been killed so far, the highest death toll for Russian forces in any war since WWII.
