France Cuts Nuclear Output This Weekend on Low Demand, High Renewables

POWER

EdF will shut down several nuclear reactors this weekend amid low demand and high renewables output, remit data showed.

  • EdF plans to halt the 1.31GW Golfech 2 reactor from 1-3 June, extending maintenance that was scheduled to last until 1 June.
  • The 915MW Tricastin 1 reactor will be offline from 1-3 June.
  • The 1.31GW Belleville 1 and 915MW Cruas 2 nuclear reactors will be offline from 1-2 June.
  • French wind output is forecast at 5.74GW to 6.95GW during base load this weekend – equal to load factors up to 35%. Solar PV output is forecast at 5.64GW to 6.29GW this weekend during peak-load hours according to SpotRenewables.
  • French power demand is forecast to peak at 45.2GW on Saturday and at 43.08GW on Sunday according to RTE data.
  • French peak-load prices for delivery on 1 June were negative for several hours amid firm wind and solar generation, with lower demand adding additional downward pressure on the day. This trend could change next week, with French wind anticipated to be low over 3-4 June, however, forecasts for high solar output could keep peak load gains limited.
