/FRANCE: France Sees Putin Moving Towards De-Escalating Ukraine Tension: FT

RUSSIA

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed not to undertake any new “military initiatives” and withdraw troops from neighbouring Belarus after the completion of scheduled joint exercises, French officials told the Financial Times.

  • The report suggests that the agreement was "brokered during talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Monday." The French President is now heading to Ukraine for talks with President Zelensky.
  • In addition to guarantees on military activity in the region, the agreement could reportedly result in "further meetings and an agreement on a structured dialogue on collective security”.
  • The newspaper cites Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as noting that "Putin and Macron were “prepared to continue dialogue” on the French proposals but that the discussions had yet to fully assuage Moscow’s concerns."
  • Putin and Macron did not point to any such agreement during their joint press conference on Monday, with Russia's leader offering some combative comments instead.
