France Risks Power Shortage In January Amid Lower Nuclear: RTE

ENERGY

France is facing a greater risk of power crunches in January as nuclear availability is likely to be lower than previously forecast, French grid operator RTE said.

  • “The situation appears less risky in December and from the end of February but the month of January now concentrates more risks than in the previous analysis”, RTE said.
  • The risk of resorting to the Ecowatt system, an alert to call for users to reduce consumption, appears high in January.
  • Power consumption this week peaks at 69.5GW, RTE data show.
  • EdF nuclear output so far this week stood at an average of 29.7GW. Nuclear output stood at around 31GW on Friday, Entso-e data show.
  • RTE expects nuclear power production at around 40GW at the start of next year, from a previous forecast of 45GW.
