Frost-Sefcovic Meeting Later Today As Art.16 Triggering Looms

UK Cabinet Office minister Lord Frost will meet with European Commission VP Maros Sefcovic later today in London to discuss ongoing issues with the Northern Ireland protocol. Expectations for the meeting are low, with the UK and EU positions seemingly irreconcilable.

  • The triggering of Article 16 of the NI protocol by the UK is now becoming priced in. This would see the UK end any customs checks on goods being exported from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. For the EU it risks the integrity of the Single Market given that there are no customs checks on goods exported from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland.
