FT: Senior Civil Servant Quits Gov't Legal Dept Over Brexit Stance

The FT has reported that Sir Jonathan Jones, the Treasury solicitor and the permanent secretary at the Government Legal Department is stepping down over disagreements with No. 10 over potential changes to parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

  • Jones comes as the sixth senior Whitehall official to step down this year.
  • Those within the gov't and Number 10 have made no secret of their intention to shake up the civil service, with senior adviser to the PM, Dominic Cummings, seen as a key voice behind seeking to place more responsibility onto civil servants in 'taking responsibility' for when things go wrong, stating previously that a 'hard rain' will soon fall on Whitehall mandarins.
