Gas Cap Pushes Back Other EU Energy Discussions

A struggle to agree upon an EU gas price cap has pushed discussions on other emergency energy measures to a later date – likely December 13.

  • EU diplomats were trying to reach an agreement on a package that includes strengthening a mechanism for joint gas purchases, limiting intraday price volatility, and enabling faster permitting for renewable energy projects.
  • On top of the gas price cap struggles – the EU is also wrestling to try and get an agreement together as part of G7 commitments to cap Russian oil prices from December 5. The current touted range of $65-70/bbl is being blasted as too week and unlikely to make any dent in Kremlin revenues.
