Ger Govt Off: Positive Signs About Chinese Involvement At Jeddah Talks

Reuters reporting comments from a German government officials stating that Germany has, "received positive signals about some kind of Chinese participation in Jeddah Ukraine talks."

  • The National Security Advisor-level talks, which begin tomorrow in Saudi Arabia, are a milestone in efforts to push Russia and Ukraine towards formal peace negotiations. The official said the aim of talks, "is to consolidate the different peace plans on the table, find common denominators."
  • A senior European Commission official said yesterday: "...it's critical that not just India, Brazil, and other key partners are participating but also that China is sitting at the table..."
  • The Chinese Foreign Ministry said: "China is willing to work together with the international community to continue playing a constructive role...," but declined to confirm attendance in Jeddah.
  • EU official noted, on China's lack of representation at the previous summit in Copenhagen: “Most of the participants last time around regretted that China did not participate.”
  • If the summit can produce a joint statement which agrees on fundamental principles for peace it may increase the chances of a head-of-state level meeting on the margins on the G-20 in September, or structured peace talks later in the year.
