EUROPE: German economists are highly sceptical about French President Emmanuel
Macron's euro proposals, according to the results of the latest Economists
Panel, a survey of 129 German economics professors conducted by the ifo
Institute and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
- "58% of economists surveyed reject the idea of a finance minister for the
Eurozone, versus 29%" in favour. While 60% are also opposed to a budget for the
Eurozone, versus 33% in favour of the idea", the survey found.
- "If the role of Eurozone finance minister were to be created, German
economists believe that the minister's main task should be to monitor compliance
with budgetary rules".
- An annual E4bln fund supplied by the European Commission to deal with
one-sided economic shocks is also opposed by 58% of German economists, versus
29% against.
