German Lignite, Hard Coal Generation Drops Sharply On The Year

German lignite generation fell by around 10% on the year in May, with hard coal output falling by 32% amid less favourable generation margins, while gas and solar moved up by 1% and 9%, respectively, data from Entso-E show.

  • German lignite averaged around 6.33GW in May compared to about 7.06GW in the same month last year, while output from hard coal averaged 1.46GW from 2.16GW in May 2023.
  • In comparison, gas generation remained firm at about 4.76GW in May this year compared to 4.7GW in May 2023.
  • May German dark spreads averaged -€41.04/MWh for plants with 36% efficiency during April compared -26.08/MWh over the same period, according to Bloomberg model.
  • Solar generation was the only source of renewable output to increase on the year, climbing to 11.66GW – a 2024 high – compared to 10.75GW in the same month last year, as German PV additions continue to climb.
  • Offshore wind dropped by 4% on the year to 2.04GW, with onshore output down 8% at 8.31GW.
