Germany Calls for Further Steps from EU to Phase Out Russian Energy

Germany is calling for the EU to take further steps to phase out the remaining 20% of Russian energy imports still arriving into the region, Bloomberg reported.

  • Germany and the Czech Republic are calling for the formation of a working group to identify ways to phase out remaining Russian gas supplies, mainly comprising LNG.
  • The Energy Ministers of EU members are due to meet May 30 in Brussels.
  • The EU has cut energy imports from Russia by 80% since the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. However, a number of member states remain reliant on Russian gas.
  • Imports of Russian LNG have also increased as pipeline flows were curtailed.
  • LNG imports from Russia were around 18 bcm in 2023, compared to 14 bcm in 2022. Spain’s imports of Russian LNG have doubled since the invasion of Ukraine, Bloomberg said.
  • The EU aims to be independent of Russian oil and gas by 2027.
