Germany Not Standing in Way of Gas Cap: Habeck

Germany is not standing in the way of the EU agreeing to a gas cap Economy Minister Robert Habeck told the Handelsblatt daily today.

  • Germany have been one of the key nations opposed to a European gas cap, stating that it could result in the EU not being able to attract LNG cargoes to the region.
  • "We're not blocking anything," Habeck said, "But I am sceptical when it comes to a fixed price cap in the market, because it would be either too high or too low," he said.
  • Member states had already agreed on "a flexible, dynamic and clever cap in times of excessive profits" he added.
  • The proposed cap of 275 euros per megawatt hour for month-ahead derivatives has been called out as too high by many EU nations, with a number of ministers claiming it would serve little purpose.
